Whether you're a small business below the VAT threshold, invoicing across EU borders, or selling outside the EU — Billino figures out which rules apply and gets it right automatically.
Your tax treatment depends on your revenue, your country, and who you're selling to. Here are the five situations Billino handles for you.
Most countries let you skip VAT entirely until you hit a revenue ceiling. Billino knows your country's limit, adds the legally required exemption note to every invoice automatically (e.g. §19 UStG in Germany), and warns you well before you cross.
Germany · Austria · Cyprus · Greece all supportedOnce you're above the threshold — or voluntarily VAT-registered — Billino applies the right rate for your country automatically. No rate lookup, no manual entry.
Germany 19% · Austria 20% · Cyprus 19% · Greece 24%When your client has a VAT number from another EU country, you don't charge VAT — the tax responsibility flips to them. Billino removes the VAT, adds the required "reverse charge" note, and makes sure their VAT ID appears on the invoice.
Applies from the first euro — no thresholdBelow €10,000/year in combined cross-border consumer sales: charge your own country's VAT rate. Above that, you apply each buyer's country rate and file via OSS (One Stop Shop). Billino tracks your cumulative cross-border volume and flags when you're approaching the limit.
The threshold resets each calendar yearSales to clients outside the EU are always VAT-free regardless of amount. Billino marks the invoice as an export supply automatically — nothing else to do on your end.
UK, Switzerland, and all non-EU countriesBelow these annual revenue limits you don't need to charge VAT. Billino tracks your invoiced total and alerts you before you cross.
| Country | Exemption threshold | Standard VAT rate | Reduced rates | Super reduced |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 🇩🇪Germany | €25,000 / yr | 19% | 7% | — |
| 🇦🇹Austria | €55,000 / yr | 20% | 13% / 10% | 4.9% |
| 🇨🇾Cyprus | €15,600 / yr | 19% | 9% / 5% | 3% |
| 🇬🇷Greece | €10,000 / yr | 24% | 13% | 6% |
Thresholds and rates can change with each budget cycle. Billino always uses the current figures — these are for quick reference only.
A few specialized situations sit outside what Billino handles automatically. If either applies to you, talk to us before relying on Billino for it.
Billino is built for freelancers, sole traders, and companies. It doesn't support the VAT rules for charities, associations, or other tax-exempt organizations.
Private tutors, certain medical practitioners, and a few other narrowly defined professions qualify for VAT treatment based on who they are, not what they sell. Billino doesn't model these.
A few services are taxed based on where they physically happen rather than where your client is from — a hotel stay, festival or conference admission, or work on a building. Billino doesn't yet have a way to flag these, so they're taxed using the normal cross-border rules instead.
